As I try to build up my brand and business, I have decided to enter the world of craft fairs. Craft fairs/shows are tricky to navigate. You must first find out about the various fairs/shows. Now this is a where I had a dickens of a time trying to find information.
Working under the motto, “The internet is your friend.” I immediately started doing a web search for craft fairs in my area. Most of the results provided links to paid sites which have their advantages and disadvantages. One the most beneficial advantages is that it offers a collection the name of the fair/show, date, and location of shows across the country. The major disadvantage is that a monthly or yearly fee is required.
Now if you are anything like me, FREE is my favorite word. I could not justify the expense of paying for access when I have never participated in a craft show. I wanted to dip my toe in the waters of the craft show world locally before I make a major commitment to doing show across the country.
My next option would be a tedious step but it is FREE. I decided to check the websites for the surrounding cities around me and EUREKA. After searching around the site, I hit pay dirt. The towns around have all kinds of festivals and events, who know. I also joined the Facebook pages of those cities. They often post adverts for vendors and artist.
During my search, a city around me was having a craft fair that Saturday. Also, the city hosted this fair every other weekend. What luck! It was time for a field trip. I would recommend visiting 1 or 2 craft fairs before you venture out on your own. It will give you an opportunity to see what kind of things are being sold and if what you are selling will be well received. Also, it will allow you to see different booth setups and what may work for you.
I got some great ideas on things like optimizing your 10′ x 10′ booth space to some inventive ways of weighing down your tent. I would highly recommend visiting fairs, plus I got buy some creative items.
I wanted to give myself some time to build up my inventory, about 4-5 months would do. Now that I have done the research it is time to start applying.
Wish me luck.
